Description	:	Evelyn Theodora Nelson, passed away June 7, 2009 in Holdrege. Evelyn was born on the family farm northeast of Bertrand in Phelps County, the eldest of two children of Carl J. and Hanna (Isaacson) Johnson. She was baptized on January 27, 1914 by Reverend A.L. Anderson and later confirmed in June of 1927 at the Westmark Evangelical Church by Reverend Lars A. Almquist. Evelyn was born on the family farm northeast of Bertrand in Phelps County, the eldest of two children of Carl J. and Hanna (Isaacson) Johnson. She was baptized on January 27, 1914 by Reverend A.L. Anderson and later confirmed in June of 1927 at the Westmark Evangelical Church by Reverend Lars A. Almquist. She received her primary education at District #75, the Beehive School and then two years at Holdrege High School before her graduation from Loomis High School with the class of 1931. Following her education, Evelyn moved to Omaha, Nebraska for a year, where she was employed by the Immanuel Lutheran Institute Hospital. Evelyn then relocated to Denver, Colorado for four years, where she did domestic work for wealthy families. On October 9, 1940 she was united in marriage to Holland H. Nelson at the Westmark Church and to this union two sons were born: Daniel Holland and David Morris. The family engaged in farming on the Nelson family homestead northeast of Bertrand. Evelyn loved life on the farm, raising her sons and working side-by-side with her husband, Holland. Later in years, she worked at Christian Homes as a caregiver. On February 9, 2003 she was preceded in death by her husband, Holland. In April of 2005, Evelyn made her home at the Christian Homes Care Community. Evelyn was a longtime member of the Westmark Evangelical Free Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active with the Women's Ministries. Many friendship bonds were formed through the years being active in the Help-U Club and extension club. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, garden and loved collecting spoons from family travels. She will be remembered for her talent as an excellent cook for church and family functions. She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons: Daniel Nelson of rural Loomis, Nebraska and David Nelson and his wife, Jeannette of Bertrand; five grandsons: Curt Nelson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jeremy Nelson and his wife, Karen of Bertrand, Scott Nelson and his wife, Jackie of Melbourne, Florida, Jeff Nelson and his wife, Yuliya of Edmond, Oklahoma and Kevin Nelson of Omaha, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren: Travis and Samantha Nelson and August Nelson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Morris Johnson.
