Her funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Friday, December 23, at the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington with Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington Cemetery. Friends may call this Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday morning. Evelyn Phillips was born on September 11, 1910, to Alexander and Rosa (Reuter) Rowen at Wessington, SD. She attended rural schools through the 8th grade and then helped to care for her family after the passing of her mother. On July 9, 1932, Evelyn married Jack Heller at Custer, SD. To this union 1 son, Lee Alan Heller, was born. Jack passed away on September 12, 1938. On September 17, 1940, Evelyn married Lloyd Earl Phillips at Wessington, SD. They farmed south of Wessington. To this union 3 children were born, Sandra, Janet, and Jerry. Lloyd passed away on February 20, 1975. Evelyn moved from the farm to Wessington. She became a resident of the Prairie Good Samaritan Center at Miller, SD, in January of 1997. She was a member of the Wessington Presbyterian Church, Wessington Presbyterian Women, Jolly Quilters club, and the Wessington Senior Center. Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, cooking, baking, and having her family in for meals. She was well known for her unique sense of humor and was loved by everyone who knew her for it. She is survived by 2 sons and 1 daughter, Lee (Marilyn) Heller of Wolsey, Sandra (James) Nielson of Oacoma, SD, and Jerry (Diane) Phillips of Wessington; 1 son-in-law, Roy Mehling of Wessington; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and 1 sister-in-law, Beth Rowen of Halfway, OR. She was preceded in death by her parents; her 2 husbands; 9 brothers and sisters; 1 granddaughter, Brenda Mehling-Wong; and 1 daughter, Janet Mehling on March 31, 2005.
