Description	:	Even G. Moen was born in North Aurdal, Valders, Norway in 1869. On April 23, 1874, at the age of five, he left Norway with his parents and siblings Halver, Gjertrud, Christian, and Martin heading for the Goose River Valley, Norway Township, in Traill County, North Dakota, where most of his mother's family was already living and had provided a place for them to stay. Moen was born in North Aurdal, Valders, Norway in 1869. On April 23, 1874, at the age of five, he left Norway with his parents and siblings Halver, Gjertrud, Christian, and Martin heading for the Goose River Valley, Norway Township, in Traill County, North Dakota, where most of his mother's family was already living and had provided a place for them to stay. Later his family moved to Steele County, North Dakota and had a farm there. This is where he had fond memories of his boyhood on the homestead. He could remember a pair of pants which his mother made for him from a sturdy grain sack. Later he moved to Portland, Traill County, North Dakota with his mother and brother Christian. On Nov. 30, 1899, he married Karen Larson Johnson. Sometime between 1910 and 1912 he began operating a shoe and clothing store in Portland, North Dakota. This he continued for almost 40 years. He is remembered by many as “Even Moen, the shoemaker.” The young folks of his day remember the store as a place to get their “penny candy.” The store is now Portland’s Barber Shop. Even and his wife Karen never had any children of their own, but adopted a baby son, Carl. His wife Karen died on Sept. 3, 1940. Even passed away on Sept. 17, 1947, after about a year at the Old Peoples’ Home at Northwood, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. He and his wife are buried at Aurdal Cemetery, beside the Aurdal Church where his family were early pioneers members, and Even and his wife Karen were still members.
