Born in Buffal, N.Y., Jan 31, 1854, Mr. Curtis was married to Frances Hulda Courtwright at Ripon, Wis., in 1874. A year later they moved to Dakota Territory, settling at Yankton and he began teaching school, a career he followed for the next 28 years at various places in the state. He homesteaded near Centerville in 1876, later living in Castlewood where he joined the Masonic and Easter Star lodges more than 6o years ago. For a time he lived in Monroe, where he served as postmaster and in Hitchcock where he operated a hotel. Nearly 40 year ago he moved to Huron, which has since been his home. He served two terms as Beadle County Auditor and after that two terms as a state representative. It was while he was in the legislature in Pierre that he observed his 80th birthday. Two years ago his family held open house in honor of his 90th birthday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Whitney, at which more than 150 friends called despite the fact it was a stormy day. Mr. Curtis, whose wife died 16 years ago, was also precede in death by an only brother, who died about 25 years ago. Surviving him are one son and three daughters; Fred Curtis, Redfield; Mrs. Jessie Huntington, Mrs. E.I. Bowe and Mrs. Clifford Williams of Huron. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Mrs Max Finke,Mrs. George Kerr, Miss Corine Bowe, of Huron; Homer Huntington, Watertown; Mrs. Kris Gilbertson, Rhinlander, Wis., and Roy Curtis, Huron, and 11 great grandchildren.
