Leighton, 88, Henderson, Iowa, were Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the Griswold Methodist Church with Pastor Rick Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Elliott, Montgomery County, Iowa. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Leighton died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at Bryan/LGH Medical Center East, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. He was born June 28, 1914, in Yuma, Colorado, to Charles Arthur and Sena Katherine (Meier) Leighton. They moved to the Griswold area when he was four years old and he attended area rural schools. On June 28, 1939, he married Viola Alice Fox at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa and he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. They lived in various places in southwest Iowa including Atlantic, Elliott, Griswold, Macedonia, and for the last few years, he lived in rural Henderson. For many years, he farmed and drove stock and grain trucks. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola Leighton, December 29, 1972; two brothers, Donald and Wilbur Leighton; and one sister, Dorothy Rockwell. Survivors include a son, John Leighton and his wife Paulette of Omaha, Nebraska; one daughter, Marilyn Davis and her husband Mike of Wahoo, Nebraska; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester Leighton and his wife Nova of Griswold, Harold Leighton and his wife Jane of Griswold; two sisters, Velma Bates and her husband Dean E. of Griswold and Shirley Conner of Lenoir, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Alice Leighton of Griswold, Iowa.
