Description	:	Everett Elwood Newman Sr., 87, of Galax and Holden Beach, N.C., slipped away peacefully in his sleep February 24, 2012. Elwood was born in Galax October 24, 1924, to Everett Vinton and Cleo Hackler Newman. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Brown Newman. Elwood was born in Galax October 24, 1924, to Everett Vinton and Cleo Hackler Newman. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Brown Newman. Elwood was a loving and unselfish husband, father and grandfather. Elwood was the captain of the Galax High School football team and he and Doris graduated with the Galax High School Class of 1944. After graduation he worked for Allied Chemical Corp. In 1948, along with his parents, N&H Grocery was established in West Galax. Elwood was involved with the Galax Retail Merchants Association and the Galax Volunteer Fire Department as well as the first Rescue Squad Unit in the State of Virginia. Elwood enjoyed golf but his true passion was his love for boats and fishing. Along with his wife and parents, the rental properties at Holden Beach were established. For many years area residents enjoyed their summer vacations at the Beachcomber Cottages at Holden Beach. He loved both the Blue Ridge Mountains and the North Carolina Coast and shared his time between the two. He is survived by his wife, Patricia B. Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Roger Martin; his son, E. Elwood (Sonny) Newman Jr., all of Galax. He leaves behind four grandchildren, Lisa M. Irvin (Steve), of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mark Martin (Tonya), of Broadway, N.C., Barry Newman (Tonia) and Jason Newman (Joanie), all of Galax. Ten great-grandchildren, three great-great- grandchildren, stepson, David Burnett (Mandy) and their children also survive. Family will receive friends starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the First Christian Church in Galax. The service will begin at 3 p.m. with burial following at Felts Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of condolence to Twin County Hospice, 818 Glendale Road, Suite 2, Galax, VA 24333; or the Galax Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 147, Galax, VA 24333. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for Elwood's extraordinary caregivers from Southwest Virginia Home Health Care and Twin County Hospice.
