Stivers, 31, son of Mr. & Mrs. S. A. Stivers was burned almost beyond recognition in the crash and no hope was given for his recovery after he was removed to the hospital. With Stivers were two other young men from Cicero, one being killed, and the other seriously injured. Stivers was well known in Clinton, where the family has resided for many years. He leaves his parents, two brothers, Alvin Stivers of Clinton and Ralph Stivers, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Cunningham of Waynesville, Helen and Ethel May Stivers, at home. He also leaves his wife and seven children. He was a grandson of Mrs. I. J. Chance and a nephew of Noah Stivers, both of Clinton. The body was taken to Altoona, Ia., the home of his wife, where funeral services will be held Monday afternoon. Stivers was airplane mechanic instructor in the high school at Berwyn. The Altoona Herald, Altoona, Iowa August 25, 1932, Page 1 Stivers Killed in Aeroplane Fall Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Shaffer received a message last Thursday that their son-in-law Everett Stivers had been seriously injured in an airplane wreck, at Pontiac, Illinois. Mrs. Shaffer with her daughter Mrs. E. W. Heller and two sons Lewis and Junior left immediately by auto. They reached the Stivers home at Berwin about four o'clock Friday morning but Mr. Stivers had succumbed to his wounds and passed away at St. James hospital in Pontiac about two hours before their arrival. Mr. Stivers had been an instructor in aeronautics in the Cicero High School a suburb of Chicago at Ashburn Field, which is adjacent to the Chicago Municipal Air Field. He with two of his high school students had gone to Pontiac, Illinois, to carry up passengers at a picnic there. Mr. Stivers and the boys were making a take-off from a nearby pasture field, and were flying low when the accident happened. Just what caused it is not known but the plane dipped to the ground and burst into flames, one of the boys was killed instantly and the other lived but a few hours. Mr. Stivers was able to walk into a nearby hospital give his name and address and then became unconscious from which he never fully recovered. Mrs. Stivers and her brother Norman B. Shaffer of Chicago were with Mr. Stivers at the hospital. Arrangements were made following his death and the body brought to Altoona to the home of Mrs. Stivers parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Shaffer on Saturday and the funeral held from the Shaffer home here Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by E. W. McDade, of Des Moines, a former pastor and old fiend of the family, who also officiated at the marriage ceremony of Mr. and Mrs. Stivers ten years ago, June 10, 1922. He was assisted by Rev. Chas. S. Macy, pastor of the Altoona Church of Christ. Following the service the body was laid to rest in the Altoona cemetery. Everett V. Stivers was born at Farmer City, Illinois on October 15, 1899, making him thirty-two years, ten months and three days old. He was a graduate of Iowa State College, at Ames i the Electrical Engineering Department and had taught in the High Schools at Humboldt and Ft. Dodge, Iowa, going to Harvey, Illinois and later to Cicero, Illinois to teach in the High Schools, where he took up aeronautics and was an instructor pilot, who was considered by his associates as one of the best and most careful pilots in the state. He is survived by his wife and seven children, his father and mother, three sisters and two brothers. Those who came to attend the funeral here Monday were; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney A. Stivers and daughter Ethel may; his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs Joe Cunningham, all of Clinton, Illinois; an uncle Mr. Frank Stivers, of Mason City and daughter Edna of Des Moines, an aunt, Mrs. Porter of Biggsville, Illinois and Mr. and Mrs. James Genesta and family of Cicero, Illinois a student pilot and friend of Mr. Stivers. The respect and honor in which he was held at Cicero and in his pilot work was shown by the messages and beautiful floral remembrances sent from the school and Air Field at Cicero.
