Read More	EVERETT WOODROW "WILLARD" GWARTNEY Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, July 23, 1936 YOUNG MAN DROWNS AT ARTERBURN Woodrow Gwartney Succumbs In Attempt To Swim Lake Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist church for Woodrow Gwartney, who was drowned Sunday afternoon in Arterburn Lake. The services were conducted by Rev. Norman D. Renn, and burial was at the Holyoke cemetery. Gwartney went to the lake about two o'clock Sunday afternoon with a group of friends. He was considered a good swimmer and when he attempted with several other companions to swim across the late, the other swimmers thought nothing of it. He wore overalls instead of a swimming suit. When he was about half way across the lake he disappeared from view, and when he came to the surface of the water, he called for help. Several swimmers immediately swam toward him, but by the time they had reached the middle of the lake, Gwartney had gone down. As the water was about 15 feet deep, they were unable to successfully locate the body for nearly two hours, and by that time efforts for resuscitation were unavailing. He was 24 years old and was the son of Mrs. Alice Gwartney. His father, J.R. Gwartney, preceded him in death about two years. He had attended both the grade and high schools in Phillips County, and had lived on a farm practically all his life. OBITUARY Everett Woodrow Gwartney was born to Jacob R. and Alice E. Gwartney on July 4, 1912 at Bushnell, Nebraska and departed this life July 19, 1936, at the age of 24 years and 15 days. When he was four years old he moved with his parents to Pueblo County, Colorado. They lived there until coming to Phillips County in 1921, where Woodrow grew to manhood. He attended both the public and high schools of Phillips County. On April 12, 1925, he united with the First Baptist Church of Holyoke. His father preceded him in death in 1933. He leaves to mourn his passing his mother and two half sisters, Mrs. William Parks of Pasadena, Texas, and Mrs. Edward Eversold of Ukra, California; and two half brothers, Roy Gwartney of Central City, Nebraska and Leslie N. Gwartney of Salmon City, Idaho, and many friends. Woodrow was a blessing to his parents, having carefully watched over his father during his long illness and staying by and helping his widowed mother. (Note: earlier records under Willard Gwartney)
