Description	:	Everette W. Kahl of Columbia passed away Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at age 99. Private graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorial visitation and celebration of life reception will be held in mid-November to celebrate his 100th birthday. Specific arrangements will be announced at a later date. The son of Fredrick and Hermina Fett Kahl was born in rural Hardin County, Iowa, near Buckeye on Nov. 15, 1909. His first eight grades of education were in a one-room school near the family farm. They moved to Nevada, Iowa, where he attended high school, graduating in 1927. After working for Bridgeton Aircraft at Lambert Field in St. Louis and receiving flying instructions, he returned to Nevada, starting as a lineman repairman for the local telephone company. A long career in the telephone industry covered 47 years, serving in various capacities in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri ,with a final position being vice president of GTE (Verizon) of the Midwest. Virginia Witmer Keefe, now deceased, became his wife on Dec. 5, 1936. They moved to Columbia in 1962 and retired in 1974. He was a member of several business and social organizations on a local, state and national level, the Columbia Rotary Club as a recipient of the Paul Harris and Tom Botts awards. They are the parents of two children, the Nancy McKey, now deceased, and Stephen Kahl of Rockwall, Texas. Four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
