Description	:	Evert Fredrick Opkis was born in Hanover, Germany, on the 20th day of February, 1859, and died at his home in Creighton, Nebraska, at 12:15 noon on January 29, 1931, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 9 days. He came to America in the year 1882 and landed in Peoria, Illinois, where he worked on the farm for five years. Read More	Evert Fredrick Opkis was born in Hanover, Germany, on the 20th day of February, 1859, and died at his home in Creighton, Nebraska, at 12:15 noon on January 29, 1931, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 9 days. He came to America in the year 1882 and landed in Peoria, Illinois, where he worked on the farm for five years. He, then, moved to Hooper, Nebr., in Dodge county where he continued to work out for three years, after which he started farming for himself, batching for two years. On September 14, 1888, he was united in marriage to Anna Catherine Dickman at Fremont and established housekeeping at Hooper. To this union ten children were born, six girls and four boys. After spending seven years at Hooper, he moved with his family to Knox county,on a farm one mile northeast of Creighton where he lived one year and then moved to his farm ten miles northeast of Creighton, where he resided until fourteen years ago, when he retired from the farm and moved to Creighton, where he has since resided. As a pioneer, he endured the hardships of his day in a creditable manner. He was a hard worker, a good neighbor and a respected citizen. He was a successful farmer, a careful investor and provided for his old age. He was a good home provider, a splendid husband and kind father. His counsel was sound and his advice was often sought by his children, neighbors and friends. He was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany and had attached himself to the Methodist Church during the past fifteen years. He lived a commendable example to his fellow citizens. He became sick about 4 years ago, and has continued to be in failing health since. His heart and lungs have given him much trouble and he has been suffering greatly for the past few months. All that could be done by medical science was attempted but he could find no relief and passed peacefully to his rest on Thursday. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and ten children; Fred and Jacob of Creighton, Otto of Center, Charley of Carpenter, Iowa; Mrs. Henry Wricks and Mrs. Ludwig Kumm of Osmond; Mrs. Carl Buskirk, Page; Mrs. Mauritz Kemp of Niobrara; Mrs. Irwin Jensen of Winnetoon, Mrs. Ernest Schultz of Bloomfield, 32 grandchildren and one sister and one brother in Germany, together with a host of other friends. "The golden evening brightens in the west, Soon, soon, to faithful warriers cames thy rest; Sweet is the calm of Paradise the blest, Hallelujah." Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon from the Methodist church, the pastor Rev. W.E. Wilson being in charge. A large number of friends and neighbors gathered to pay their final tribute to Mr. Opkis. The remains were laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery.
