Mr. Shepherd and son Bryan were stretching fence and planting corn and Carl Norman was planting corn in an adjoining field. Emmett, who had been in his usual good health, not needing a doctor's services for several years, complained of a pain in his chest about an hour previous to his death. He kept on working, however and finally fell over. His son ran to him and found him dying. A doctor was summoned from Lancaster but his services were of no avail. Ewell Emmett Shepherd, son of W. P. and Susan Shepherd, was born in Pettis county, Mo., about eighteen miles from Sedalia and passed away at his home five miles north of Lancaster, Mo., May 16, 1939, being at the time of his death 73 years, 4 months and 17 days. When a small child the family moved to Bates, county, Mo., later coming to Schuyler county in 1874. A part of his young manhood was spent in the west, Canada and Alaska, returning to Missouri in 1898. On February 26, 1899, he was married to Miss Mary Frances Jones. To this union four sons were born, Paul H. of San Diego, Calif., Wm. Royden of Lancaster, Emmett Bryan and Aubrey Perry at home. These with his faithful wife survive him. The following brothers, Eugene of Lancaster, Ewing of Downing, Erastus of Des Moines, two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Tilley of Melcher, Iowa, Mrs. Elmora Hulen of Lancaster, five grand children, Paul Samuel and Shirley Lou of San Diego, Calif., Mary Maxine, Richard, Anna Louise of Lancaster, also survive him. He became a member of the Christian church at Darby in 1912, and served his church as an elder for many years. He was a successful farmer, a kind neighbor and a loving father and husband. His sudden passing away was a severe shock to the family and community. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. M. Lind of Queen City at the Christian church last Thursday afternoon and interment was in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Pall bearers were: Edward Shepherd, W. F. Shepherd, Edison Shepherd, Teddy Shepherd, Woodrow Shepherd, Wendell Shepherd, Harold Shepherd. Singers: J. A. Riley, W. A. Higbee, A. A. Justice, Jimmie Russell. Songs: "Faith of Our Fathers," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Have Thine Own Way." Flower girls: Mrs. Leonard Ballew, Cleo Jeffries, Mrs. Sybil Gingerich, Mrs. Pearl Webster and Leota Shepherd.
