Read More	HOUCHIN, EWIN—At his residence in this city, Monday, January 21, 1895, Ewin Houchin, aged 80 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Deceased was born near Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, February 3,1814. At the age of four his parents emigrated to the state of Indiana where the deceased resided with his parents for about 15 years when he moved to Illinois, where he resided the greater part of his life, his residence being most of this time in Livingston county. He was married to Rachel Hedges November 26, 1835. The result of this marriage was eight children, seven sons and one daughter, but one of whom outlived him. His wife died in 1869, and she together with six sons and their daughter, is buried in Livingston county. Four of these sons died during the war, of sickness contracted in the Union army. June 29, 1870, he was married to Mrs. Barbara Hager of Illinois who survives him. Since 1883, Mr. Houchin has resided in Fillmore county, dividing his time between Geneva and his farm northeast of town. He had followed farming as an occupation all his life, and he amassed a comfortable fortune. In 1842, he joined the Methodist church, but had a consistent member of the Congregational church since coming to Geneva. Besides his wife, a son, John Houchin of Livinston county, Illinois, two brothers, Saulsbury of this city and Enoch of Danville, Illinois; and two sisters residing in Logan county, Illinois survive the deceased. Mr. Houchin was a man of sturdy character and strong opinions, and he was of a nature calculated to influence those with whom he was brought in contact. His death will be sincerely mourned by the large circle of friends that have been attracted and attached to him during his long residence in this locality. The funeral will take place from the Congregational church tomorrow afternoon at tow o'clock, and the interment will be in the Geneva cemetery. ****************************************************************************** The funeral of the late Ewin Houchin, a notice of whose death appeared on Tuesday, took place from the Congregational church in this city Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, and was very largely attended. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.E. Breeton. In the obituary notice given Tuesday, the cause of death was not referred to. It was a fall received Wednesday afternoon, January 16. The deceased and William Walker were walking along on the sidewalk, and they had got within about two hundred feet of Mr. Houchin's home, when Mr. Houchin stepped too near the edge of the walk and one of the boards tipped up, tripping him, and throwing him to the ground heavily on his left side. About fifteen years ago in Odell, Illinois, he received a similar fall, which nearly occasioned his death at the time, and from which he never fully recovered, and this undoubtedly increased the dangerous nature of the accident. Help was summoned and he was carried to his home, where he expired nearly five days later, having gained the power of speech, but once and then only to utter a sentence. Perhaps the following extract from a history of Livingstone county, Illinois, published in 1878, will be of interest at this time: "In 1835, Mr. Houchin came to what is now Livingston Co., and opened a farm in Newton, and resided in that township, although not on the same farm, until 1865, when he moved to Odell; he owned at one time 600 acres of land, and still owns about 450 acres in the county; when he first came to the country, he used to work for twenty-five cents a day, and take his pay in store goods; his market was Chicago, 100 miles distant; the best wheat brought 50 cents a bushel, and from that down to 25 cents; oats, after being hauled 100 miles, sold for 10 cents a bushel; Mr. Houchin estimates that he has chopped and split fully 100,000 rails in Illinois; he is the only man now living in the county who built a cabin here prior to the fall of 1835; he built the second cabin in Newton."
