Ezekiel Eldridge Swift, Jr. Died in Woods Hole, April 28, 1909, Ezekiel Eldridge Swift, Jr., aged 80 years, 11 months, and 27 days. In the death of Mr. Swift there passed out of life one who was conversant with the life of this village longer than almost any other resident here. So far as I have been able to learn there are at most only four persons now living who have spent more, or as many years in Woods Hole as he. He was the son of Ezekiel Eldridge Swift and Mahala Hatch. He was born in Falmouth village on the place now known as the Gardner Greene Hammond place, May 1, 1828. For many years his father was captain of a packet sloop which ran from Fslmouth wharf to New Bedford. Somewhere about 1840, (I cannot ascertain the exact date), the family removed to Woods Hole and have resided here ever since. In 1842 his father built the house now owned and occupied by Mrs. Asa Shiverick, which became the family residence. In 1848 Mr. Swift married Lucy Thompson Grew of Woods Hole, and their married life continued in unbroken peace and happiness almost sixty years. Mrs. Swift died March 22, 1908. Soon after their marriage they removed to Sandwich where Mr. Swift was employed as carpenter in the Glass Factory. Here were born their two eldest children, Helon Ward and Love Frances, now Mrs. Cornell of Woods Hole. In 1853 Mr. Swift returned to Woods Hole and worked at his trade until 1861, when he took the contract to carry the mail and drive the stage from Woods Hole to Monument on the Old Colony Railroad. For eleven years, 1864-1875, he was in the employ of the Pacific Guano Company of Woods Hole, as carpenter and general mechanic. Leaving the guano factory he resumed his occupation as carpenter and builder, being employed by Mr. Joseph Story Fay and others. He built several prominent houses in Woods Hole, among which are the residence of Mr. H.H. Fay at Nobska, the house of the late Daniel W. Butler, and summer home of Mr. J. S. Fay, Jr. During the latter years of his life he associated with himself in business his younger son, Edward, under the firm name of E. E. Swift and Son. He continued in management of his business until a very short time before his death. Mr. Swift achieved a name for the excellence of his work. It is said that several persons who did not employ him in building because other contractors underbid his terms, afterwards remarked that they should have done better to have employed Mr. Swift because of the better quality of work which he was accustomed to do. I think his uprightness and integrity in business was never questioned. Mr. Swift was not unmindful of the interests of the village, being a member of the association which built Liberty hall, and also of the organization which founded and has maintained to the present time the Woods Hole social library. Mr. Swift was a member of the Masonic order, having been admitted to the lodge in Falmouth in 1869, of which he was chaplain for many years. He was admitted to the Royal Arch degree in New Bedford in 1877. Mr. Swift was a man of strong religious inclinations. The records in regard to his early religious affiliations are uncertain. His father's family was connected with the Congregational church in Falmouth, but it is not probable that he was ever a member of that church. His name is found on the records of the members of the Methodist Episcopal church in Falmouth, beginning probably before his marriage. His name seems to have continued on the roll of that church until the formation of the Methodist church in Woods Hole in 1881. In 1873 his name appears among the officers of the parish of the Messiah, in Woods Hole. He was clerk of the parish from 1873 to 1881, inclusive; treasurer from 1882 to 1892; vestryman from 1877 to 1892; junior warden from 1893 to 1896; and senior warden from 1897 to the time of his decease; and delegate to the diocesan convention since 1894. Mr. Swift was fond of music, and was always ready in his younger days to start the tunes in the prayer meetings, for which he used his tuning fork, and after coming to the Episcopal church he sang in the choir for many years. He was faithful and regular in his attendance at the services of the Church, devout in his worship, and one of the few men in the parish who was regular in his attendance at the Holy Communion. There is no record of his confirmation in the Episcopal church, but his regular and faithful discharge of his duties as a member of that Church entitled him to the confidence and affection of his rector and brethren, and we return thanks to God, our Heavenly Father, for the manifestations of grace which we saw in his life, and pray that we may have divine help to follow him in all ways that are pure and good.
