Fay was born January 28, 1926 to Jesse E. and Gwen (Bean) Newill on a farm east of Lyons, Nebraska. They moved to Lyons when she was two years old. She attended Lyons Public School, where she was involved in Glee Club, Girl Scouts, Home Economics Club and Cheerleading. She graduated in 1943. Starting in the sixth grade, Fay worked as a skate girl at the Lyons Skating Rink. After graduation, she attended Union Pacific School of Telegraphy and later went to work at Glenn Martin Bomber Plant. Moving back to Lyons, she helped manage the U.S. Brush Factory. She met George Ray at the Skating Rink. They were married in the Lyons Methodist Church November 9, 1947. They were blessed with three sons: Bradley, Mitchell and Jeffrey. Fay and George farmed all their lives, except for three years when they lived in Watertown, South Dakota. During that time, Fay managed a sportswear department at Herberger's. After returning to Nebraska, she was employed at Burt County Co-Op in Tekamah for 16 years. Fay enjoyed dancing, cheering on the Huskers, playing cards and watching her grandkids play sports. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and numerous card clubs. Fay was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 56 years, George; brothers, Lawrence and Harry Newill. Left to cherish her memory are her sons and daughters-in-law: Bradley (Barbara) Ray of Tekamah; Mitchel (Karen) Ray of St. Johns, MI; Jeffrey (Lisa) Ray of Mankato, MN; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
