Read More	Mrs. Faye O King --- Faye Opal King, 73, of Clarks Hill, died at 5 a.m. on June 10, 1982 in Home Hospital in Lafayette, Ind. where she had been a patient for nine days. She was born at Fithian, Ill., and had lived in Tippecanoe County the past 60 years. She married George U. King in 1925. He died in October of last year. She was an active member of the Clarks Hill Christian Church. Faye and George were both members of the Wabash Valley Gem and Mineral Society, almost from its beginning. They exhibited annually in our club show. During the past two years Faye has worked with Gerry Gallun to arrange a "touch and feel" rock and mineral exhibit for the blind. Faye had been the club historian since 1962. She annually compiled notebooks of the club's activities, and these notebooks were displayed at the club show. She also was Liaison Officer for the Mid-West Federation since 1965. She was a reporter for the Wabash Valley Views, and last year she compiled a history of the first thirty years of the WVGMS. This history ran serially in the newsletter. Faye and Mary Schuder were co-chairpersons for the 1st Indiana Rock Swap held at Boswell, Ind. Faye and George collected quantities of fern fossils from the coal mines near Terre Haute. Faye became an authority on fern fossils, and she and George sold and traded fossils to help pay for their many trips west. She won second place with her fossil display at the Mid-West Federation show at Evansville. Faye was a very competitive person and wanted to win in whatever she was doing, whether it was playing Yahtze or Euchre or whether it was exhibiting fossils. Mrs. King loved to take field trips and collect specimens. We will always remember her first trip to the Copper Country. She took two muslin bags--one for copper specimens and one for iron specimens. Both bags were full at the first stop at the Hiawatha Mine in Iron River, Michigan. We shipped three garbage cans filled with specimens home by truck freight, and still Faye and our son David, sat in the back seat of our car surrounded by boxes of rocks, all the way home. They played cards on the top of one box all the way from the Upper Peninsula to Lafayette. She and George went north almost every year after that and they learned to love the areas we do. On Memorial Day of this year, while visiting with us, she asked if we were going north in August (of course, we were planning such a trip). Faye said, "Blow old Lake Superior a kiss for me! I'll never see her again." Maybe she had a premonition. Faye was a good cook in both quality and quantity. She cooked for weeks prior to their vacation trips and they cooked and ate many of their meals in roadside parks. As well as she loved to eat, we have seen her skip a meal in order to have enough money to buy that special specimen she wanted for her collection. Surviving are one daughter, Mildred C. Ellis of Crawfordsville; a son, George King of Lafayette; one brother, Wallace Wade of Lafayette; and three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Davis and Mrs. Ethyel Simpson, both of Crawfordsville, and Mrs. Pauline Briles of West Lafayette. One of her grandsons, David King, is a member of WVGMS and continues the King's interest in the earth sciences. With Faye's passing the hobby has lost a devotee and we have lost a dear friend and travelling companion. Rest in peace, friend! Your bad ankle need a rest!
