| Description | : | Felix Grundy "Duke" Carter was the son of Elizabeth Miriam Ashley and William Carroll "Blackie" Carter. He was named after his grandfather who was also Felix Grundy Carter. Felix left home around 1926 (about age 13) and headed west. According to Army records, his last school was in Clendenin, Kanawha, WV. Before he left home, it appears he was an assistant to a cook in the oil fields and helped feed laborers. At one point on his trip west, he worked for a while at a brothel.
