Ernie was born Dec. 15, 1905 to Franz and Sarah Toepfer in Blue Hill He graduated at age 16 from Blue Hill High School. He attended Hastings College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He acquired his teaching endorsement and began teaching school while in his teens. In the summers he helped on the family farm east of Blue Hill. Read More	Ferdinand E. “Ernie” Toepfer, 95, died at the Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home in Ogallala. Ernie was born Dec. 15, 1905 to Franz and Sarah Toepfer in Blue Hill He graduated at age 16 from Blue Hill High School. He attended Hastings College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He acquired his teaching endorsement and began teaching school while in his teens. In the summers he helped on the family farm east of Blue Hill. He and several of his brothers helped hand-dig one of the first irrigation wells in Webster County. He taught in several regions before moving to Lewellen to teach. He later returned to Blue Hill. On Sept.1, 1938, he married Ella Helga Kiel in Wood River. They farmed in the Wood River area and later in the Guide Rock area. In 1946 they returned to Lewellen where he taught at District No. 45. His wife died in 1984. Survived by a son, Gerrod; daughters, Karla Reimann and Francine Nordman; brother, Frank; sisters, Irma Grothen and Loretta Arterburn; 8 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 1 sister. Services are 9 a.m. MDT Saturday at the Gubser Funeral Chapel in Ogallala with the Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be. at 3 .p.m. CDT in the Blue Hill Cemetery at Blue Hill with the Rev. Jim Witt of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. The casket Will be closed. Gubser Funeral Home in Ogallala is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established. Memorials may be sent to the Gubser Funeral Home, 602 N. Spruce St., Ogallala, NE 69153.
