Read More	Pierce County Leader, November 19, 1914 Good Man Laid to Rest The funeral of the late Ferdinand Koehler, who passed away at his house in the east part of Pierce on November 12 of heart trouble, was held last Sunday afternoon, November 15, at the Methodist Episcopal church. The church edifice was overcrowded with relatives and friends of the deceased, many not being able to gain admittance into the church proper. The services were held in both the German and English languages, in order that all might be able to hear of the life of the good man and friend, who had so recently been with them. Rev. Rautlinger of the German Evangelical church of Norfolk, who had known the deceased for so many years and who had been associated with him in church work, delivered the principal sermon, speaking in the German language. He was followed by Rev. O. C. Trump of the Methodist church who delivered his sermon in English. The choir of the Zion Lutheran church, consisting of Messrs. F H. Mohrman, F. J. Rastede, Gustav Manske and Louis Gruett, and the choir of the M. E. church, composed of Mrs. G. E. Drebert, Miss Rose Marsh, L. P. Tonner and H. T. Taylor, delivered the music, Mrs. Grace Montross acting as accompanist on the organ. Both ministers preached impressive sermons, and the floral tributes were profuse and beautiful. Interment was made in Prospect View cemetery south of Pierce. The pall bearers were men who had known deceased for a long time and consisted of Messrs. H. C. Buckendahl, J. F. Kolterman, Ferdinand Scheer, H. J. Manske, William Manske, Herman Magdanz. Ferdinand Koehler was born in the village of Koerlitz, province of Pomerania, Germany, February 20, 1850 and was a son of Christian and Henrietta (Buske) Koehler. The father was born in 1810 and died in 1861 and the mother was born in 1820 and died in August, 1901. In 1854 the family embarked at Hamburg, Germany, on a sailboat, and nine weeks later landed in New York, whence they went to Wisconsin and rented a farm near Watertown, living there sixteen years. The two Koehler boys, Fred and Ferdinand, came to Norfolk, Nebraska, in 1870, and immediately drove to Pierce County, where they pre-empted land, Ferdinand on section thirteen, township twenty-six, range two, and a year later changed to a homestead entry. On this he built a sod house living in this two years, and then built a good frame house. Here our subject suffered about all the hardships ever experienced by any of the pioneer settlers. In the grasshopper raids of 1873 and 1874, he lost all his crops, and also suffered from the hailstorms. In the blizzard of 1873 the two brothers were visiting at a friend’s, and were compelled to remain three days. In that of January 12, 1888, in getting the children home from school, he had to lead them, watching the ground to keep the road. Mr. Koehler was married September 10, 1872, to Miss Wilhelmina (Lempke) Manske, natives of Pomerania. Of this union twelve children were born, eight of who are living: Fred, Mrs. George Koehler, Henry, Mrs. Henry Sporleder, John, Frank, Samuel and Mrs. John Buckendahl. The dead are Mrs. Albert Kiepke, Herman, George and Louis(a). Deceased is also survived by eight grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Manske and Mrs. Frank Wichman of Hadar. Mr. Koehler was one of Pierce county’s splendid citizen, and was highly respected in his community. He was careful, upright and honorable in all his dealings and built up a comfortable fortune by his perseverance and thrift, being the owner of eight hundred acres of land. Mr. Koehler was a firm believer in the Christian faith and was a man who seldom complained. He was a kind man to his family, a good neighbor and honest in all his transactions. Mr. Koehler moved to Pierce last spring, and purchased a pleasant home in the east part of the city. It was here he was surrounded by a host of living friends and neighbors, and in the evening of his life lived in peace and comfort, with the assurance that what he possessed had rightfully come to him through his persistent efforts of industry and integrity. At the time of his passing away, Mr. Koehler was 64 years, 8 months and 22 days of age.
