Description	:	The Schumacher family history records do not record anything previous to Ferdinand Schumacher and Henrietta Rathke and their birth dates. From the Matthies family history, the records show that Ferdinand Schumacher and his wife Henriette Rathke were born and grew to adulthood near Stettin, Germany. It seems that they lived in opposite directions of Stettin, and they were casual acquaintances of Frank Matthies and Amelia (Kirchoff) Matthies, the grandparents of Carl Matthies and Helen Matthies. From the Matthies family history, the records show that Ferdinand Schumacher and his wife Henriette Rathke were born and grew to adulthood near Stettin, Germany. It seems that they lived in opposite directions of Stettin, and they were casual acquaintances of Frank Matthies and Amelia (Kirchoff) Matthies, the grandparents of Carl Matthies and Helen Matthies. The family was living in Gross Jestin, (Kreis Kolberg), Germany in 1859. In 1874 they moved to Neurese, Germany. The Schumacher family (father, mother, five children and one grandchild) emigrated to America, and these eight and another grandchild born enroute on ship arrived in Kansas in 1882. (St. John's Lutheran Church communion records show the first record of Holy Communion for the Shumacher family and Mathilde Will on Pentecost Sunday, Whitsuntide, 1882.) The family came directly to Junction City, then to about five miles north of Herington, where they stayed with friends, the Carl (Karl) Weber family. A deed recorded on August 12, 1882, showed the purchase of land N.W. 1/4, section 36-15-4, Dickinson County Kansas by Ferdinand and Henrietta Schmacher from Jno. M. Fisher and Anna M. Fisher. Soon thereafter a two room house was moved from across the road and a one room addition was built in 1882. These three rooms were the family home until 1895, when four rooms were added to make the home for Richard Schumacher and Anna Krause after their marriage in 1895. The original three rooms remained the home for Grandmother Schumacher and daughter Bertha until 1911, when Grandmother Schumacher passed away and Bertha moved to Indiana to live with relatives there. In later years the house was remodeled, and after the death of their parents, remained the home of Richard H. Schumacher and his sisters Amanda and Ida. (Source: Ida Schumacher's notes) On March 2nd, 1883, at the age of 54 years, Ferdinand signed a Declaration of Intention to become a Citizen of the United States at the Dickinson County courthouse in Abilene, Ks. Ferdinand Schumacker (sic), a well to do farmer living about 3 miles north of town, was kicked by a horse on Thursday last from which he died Saturday night. The funeral was held at the house Sunday afternoon and the interment took place at the German Lutheran church cemetery on Lyon creek four miles west of here.
