A small ceremony and interment was held March 31at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Fern Ella was born in Lisco, Neb. on Jan. 12, 1922, to Lora and William Barnwell. A small ceremony and interment was held March 31at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Fern Ella was born in Lisco, Neb. on Jan. 12, 1922, to Lora and William Barnwell. She grew up and graduated from high school in Lisco. She attended Kearney State College and earned a degree in elementary education. On March 12, 1953, Fern Ella married Harold Barger. The couple then moved to a farm near Morrill, where they lived for nine years. In 1963, Fern and Harold moved to a farm near Torrington, Wyo. They built a new house on that land and Fern was most happy being a homemaker – cooking, baking, making the drapes for her new home, sewing and needlework. Eventually, they sold the farm land, but kept their home. They then began to spend their winters in Sun Vista in Yuma, Ariz. Fern enjoyed all her new friends and the activities that were provided. On Oct. 29, 2003, Fern and Harold moved to Northfield Villa in Gering. During the years, Fern taught in elementary schools in McGrew, Scottsbluff, Morrill and Torrington. She was a member of the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church of Torrington. She participated in the women’s church circles, and loved to cook for potlucks. She was famous for her chocolate cakes! Fern was a member of the Eastern Star and proceeded through many degrees, including Worthy Matron. Easter Star played a big part in Fern’s life. She was preceded in death by her husband: Harold Barger; her parents: Lora and William Barnwell; her sister: Ruby Numon; her brother: Glen Barnwell; and her nephew: Dr. Robert Barnwell.
