She was born on May 5, 1903, in Aurora, Iowa, to George H. and Leta Armstrong. Coming to Washington as a baby, she resided many years in Farmer before moving to Richland in 1968 with her husband, Leonard, who preceded her in death in 1991. Also preceding her were her parents, a brother, Eddie Armstrong, and sisters, Marion Peterson (Mrs. Jens) and Ina Peterson (Mrs. Bert), all of the Farmer-Waterville area. Fern had been a resident and active participant at the Columbia-Edgewater Retirement Center in Richland for several years. She was devoted to her family, and her greatest love was her grandchildren. Her interests included oil painting, many crafts, needlework and going to the Oregon coast. Fern and Leonard were owners of the Farmer Store and Post Office from 1944 to 1953. After retiring to the family ranch, they spent their winters in Arizona and California before moving to Richland. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Annella Allen, Olympia; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Leland Besel, Richland; her grandchildren, Cris Allen Mitchell and son, Allen, Enumclaw; Cami Allen, Auburn; Cory-Paul Allen, Tacoma; Sandy Besel Nelson and her husband, David, Whitby, New Zealand; and Darrell Besel and wife, Amy, and daughter, Marlee, of Sumner. Other survivors include a son, James Wood and wife, Mary, in Mountlake Terrace, four grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends in her honor will be held in Waterville at a later date. Einan's Funeral Home, Richland, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be given in Fern's name to the Waterville Ambulance Fund, Waterville, Wash. 98858.
