Description	:	Fern (Fodness) Hanson was born November 5, 1925, in Lincoln County, South Dakota and died in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 17, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the fifth of six daughters born to Anna and Alfred Fodness. Read More	Fern (Fodness) Hanson was born November 5, 1925, in Lincoln County, South Dakota and died in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 17, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the fifth of six daughters born to Anna and Alfred Fodness. She lived all her life in the Canton and Sioux Falls area until her move to Phoenix in 2005 to be near her daughter, Linda, and her family. . Fern graduated from Canton High School 1943, and attended General Beadle College in Madison, South Dakota, and Sioux Falls College. She taught school in one room country schools, with grades 1-8, for four years prior to her marriage to Leonard Hanson on March 8, 1947. She and Leonard lived on the Hanson family farm until 1991 when they retired and moved to Sioux Falls. She was a baptized member of Grand Valley Lutheran Church, and a member of the Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Canton VFW Auxiliary. Fern worked at Trumm Pharmacy in Canton for twenty one years before her retirement. She and Leonard enjoyed a busy life as farmers, raising three children, Linda, Pamela and Bradley. They were active in church and enjoyed Saturday night dances regularly until Leonard's death in 1995. She loved to read the daily newspaper and her favorite novels. She watched the daily national and local news and enjoyed watching American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. Fern had a keen mind, a good sense of humor, and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She valued family gatherings with her daughters and their spouses, her five grandsons and their spouses, as well as her great grandchildren, who lovingly called her "GG." She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, and four sisters. She is survived by her children Linda and Tim Schmaltz of Phoenix AZ, Pam and John Van Ast of Waterville, MN, and Phoenix, Az., Bradley Hanson, five grandsons: Nick (Abby) Myers, Christopher (Susan), Daniel (Brianna), Andrew & Patrick Schmaltz; three step grandsons: Mike (Renae), Paul (Tammy) and Tim (Lonna)Van Ast; five great grandchildren: Katarina, Kristin, Keira, Katelynn and Joey Schmaltz and five great step grandchildren: Seth, Steven, Levi, Hank and Anneke Van Ast; her sister, Lois Barnett, nine nieces, one nephew and friends in South Dakota and Arizona.A family memorial service was held on January 24, 2011, at the Life Center at the Beatitudes Campus in Phoenix. Interment will be in the spring of 2011, at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton South Dakota.
