Eberlein was born on August 18, 1927 in Brookings County, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Messerschmidt) Eberlein. Fern received her education in a rural school in Brookings County and the Volga School and graduated from Volga High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to Randall R. Otteson, 84, of Brookings, died, Friday, October 21, 2011 at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fern L. Eberlein was born on August 18, 1927 in Brookings County, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Messerschmidt) Eberlein. Fern received her education in a rural school in Brookings County and the Volga School and graduated from Volga High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to Randall R. Otteson on December 1, 1948 in Brookings. She was employed for a short time at the Sawnee Hotel in Brookings. After raising her family, she worked as a bookkeeper at GTC Auto Parts, which was owned and operated by her and her husband until their retirement in 1991. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Ladies Aid, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling and especially spending time with her family and friends. Fern is survived by one son, Alan Otteson of Brookings, SD; one daughter, Carol (Lenard) Deiterman of Springdale, AR; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Lorraine (Edwin) Berkland, LaVada (Stanley) Schlotman all of Brookings, SD, Joyce Eberlein of Ormond Beach, FL; two brothers, Melvin (Rudie) Eberlein of Bettendorf, IA and Delven (Athene) Eberlein of Eau Claire, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Randall, one granddaughter Beth, and two brothers Alvin and Calvin. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Monday, October 24, 2011 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings.
