Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Becker – Hunt Funeral Home. Fern, born March 20, 1919, was the daughter of Ross and Sophia D. (Wendte) Polly of rural Ponca. She graduated from Ponca High School in 1936. On March 15, 1939, she married Maurice C. Crofoot in the Ponca Salem Lutheran Church. They farmed in northeast Nebraska before retiring in 1998 and moving to South Sioux City. Fern was more than a "homemaker" as she cared for a large garden and chickens and worked in the fields. She sold eggs and cream to the local grocers until stricter pasteurization laws were passed; however, the state said she could deliver to 50 customers and she always had a waiting list. She enjoyed cooking but her passion would be flowers; they were allowed to grow everywhere! As an active member of Salem Lutheran Church of rural Dakota City she had taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School, was a member of the Women of the Church, sewed quilts and served on the altar guild. She gave her time to the community too, on the Home Extension Board, as an election poll sitter, and at the Dakota County Fair open class booths. Nebraska Farm Bureau honored her as Outstanding Woman of the Year. In the later years of her life she volunteered many hours to the Dakota County Historical Society. She belonged to the Gladiola Growers Club. She loved children; so once a week she would listen to the children learning to read at Dakota City Elementary and continued that gift of time at Cardinal Elementary after moving to South Sioux City. Survivors include a daughter Roseann Padilla of Mesa, Ariz., two sons Rod of Sliddell, La. and Robbie of Brimson, Minn., six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice on May 11, 2006 in South Sioux City, a daughter Judith Ann, a granddaughter Regina Crofoot, her parents, sisters: Gladys LeMaster and Wilma Goergen and brothers: Ralph and Henry. Pallbearers were Dave Beermann, Vern Hartung, Rick Robertson, Al Beekman, Gene Robertson and Al Vandarwarka. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Culbertson, Jim Graham and Paul Foreshoe.
