She married Glenn William Lucas on Oct. 14, 1943, at her parents’ home in El Dorado. He died Feb. 6, 2001. Together they celebrated 58 years of marriage. Fern was a 1941 graduate of El Dorado High School. She attended El Dorado Junior College, and then taught school for a short time at a country school. Fern was a farmer/rancher’s wife, which included cooking three meals daily for her family, and also many farm hands during busy seasons on the farm. Friends liked to help hay and harvest at the Lucas home, since Fern was a good cook and she always had homemade pie and the best mashed potatoes. Fern belonged to the Chelsea Methodist Church, which was less than a mile from their home in Chelsea. She taught Sunday School and Bible School, always making sure her children attended. Fern was a 4-H Foods Leader, teaching all her daughters to cook. Much of her family’s life revolved around the farm and the Chelsea community and school. All agree the country life and country school was a wonderful way to raise a family. When the Chelsea Church no longer existed, Fern moved the family memberships to First United Methodist Church in El Dorado, where she attended regularly as long as she could. Fern belonged to a number of women’s groups: Home Demonstration Unit, Farm Bureau Women, West Branch Ladies, WMB Sr. Club, and United Methodist Womens Circle. She loved being with her lady friends, laughing and sharing stories. Getting dressed up and attending these events was Fern’s social life and she loved it. She loved flowers and had a big flower garden with the family’s help! Fern cherished all her family. She loved going to their programs, and loved having family around her. Her life truly revolved around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her “Gigi”. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother, Donald Locke; sisters, Opal Ellis, Dorothy Willhite, Violet Mattix and Betty Ledbetter; and son-in-law, Robert Giro.
