Ferne D. was born July 21, 1923 to Carl H. and Winifred "Winnie" A. (Wharton) McFarland at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. She attended grade school at the McFarland School and was a graduate from Volin High School. She furthered her education by attending Southern Normal Teacher's College in Springfield. Ferne D. was born July 21, 1923 to Carl H. and Winifred "Winnie" A. (Wharton) McFarland at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. She attended grade school at the McFarland School and was a graduate from Volin High School. She furthered her education by attending Southern Normal Teacher's College in Springfield. During World War II, she was employed at the United States Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She returned to Yankton and on June 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Alois Grewe at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. While residing in Yankton, she was employed by Montgomery Wards, Sears, and Dale Electronics. They moved to Omaha in 2002 and resided in the New Cassel Retirement Center, where she made numerous friends. She was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and past President of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. Family genealogy was a great interest for her but most of all she had a deep love of family. Those who will cherish her memory are her son, James (Mary) Grewe of Omaha, NE; her daughter, Marsha Grewe of Omaha, NE; two granddaughters, Heather and Hannah Grewe of Omaha, NE; a brother Orrin (Marion) McFarland of Northford, CT and a sister, Carolyn W. Winckler of Tyndall, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a brother, LaVern. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Pallbearers will be Tom Winckler, Karl Winckler Jr., Nathan Winckler, Brian McFarland, David McFarland, and Larry Pick. Arrangements by Kostel Funeral Home.
