Ferne was born December 5, 1914, the middle child of Frank and Freda Knudson. She was born and raised in Wibaux and was always proud of her Scandinavian ancestry. Read More	Ferne Lucille Prather, 90, of Big Timber passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, September 4, 2005 at Cedar Wood Villa in Red Lodge. Ferne was born December 5, 1914, the middle child of Frank and Freda Knudson. She was born and raised in Wibaux and was always proud of her Scandinavian ancestry. She was educated in the Wibaux county schools and went on to receive her teaching certificate from MSU-B (Normal). Ferne taught school for several years at Wibaux and Sweet Grass counties. Ferne took great pride in her years at those little country schools. As the years went by, she was often visited by her students who wanted to reminisce the memories of days gone by. On December 11, 1941 Ferne married the love of her life, Ralph Prather of Big Timber. During WWII, while Ralph was serving his country in the Navy, Ferne worked in a munitions factory in San Diego. Though her days were spent working, they were always brightened by the mementos Ralph would send back home to her from overseas. Later the couple returned to Montana, where Ferne and Ralph operated Ben Franklin stores in Big Timber and Lewistown. The stores remained a big part of their lives as serving the community was always important to Ferne. As a strong supporter of the community in which she lived, Ferne served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, was on the SGHS school board, was an active member of the American Lutheran Church, contributed in many ways to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Governor's Council on Aging. In addition, Ferne was a devoted advocate of senior healthcare and worked for several years as ombudsman in Sweet Grass, Stillwater and Carbon counties. Ferne was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents, her brother and her sister. She is survived by her son, Jack (Sue) Prather of Red Lodge; four grandsons, Jeff (Olga) Prather, Beau (Rachel) Prather, Ty (Bec) Cortner, and Travis "Bub" Cortner. Ferne also touched the lives of her six great grandchildren (and one more on the way). Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 8 at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Interment followed in Mountain View Cemetery.
