On April 15th he would have completed his 71st year. Mr. Montagne has been a sufferer from gangrene diabetes for the past year and a half and after suffering a second operation on the Sunday previous to his death, he gradually grew weaker until Tuesday morning when he breathed his last. Mr. Montagne was a thoroughly Christian man of large heart and congenial disposition, upright in his dealings with others and these characteristics won him the lasting friendship of this who gained his acquaintance. Mr. Montagne was born in St. Nicolas, Canada, in 1840, where he spends his boyhood days. He came to the states in the early '60's and settled in Benton, Wis., where he married Philomene Baine. They moved to this county and settled on a homestead 2 1/2 miles west of Jefferson in 1864, where he resided up to about a year ago, when he moved with his daughter to Jefferson. His wife died Aug. 7th,. 1902. To mourn his loss Flavian Montagne leaves four sons, Frank and Louis of Leads, Ia., and Charles and Joseph of this place, and three daughters, Mrs. Thos. Connors, Mr. Alcid Chicoine and Miss Isabel Montagne, all of this place. The funeral was held at the St. Peter's Catholic Church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock and was attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. The burial was made by the side of his wife in the Jefferson cemetery. The out of town people who attended the funeral were Messrs. and Mesdames T.O. Montagne of Akron, Ia., Albert Gains of Sioux City, Wesley Guillaume and John Ryan, both of Elk Point, and Messrs. Cyrus Montagne and John Ahern of Merrill, Ia., T.
