The seven pick miners were attacking the coal vein immediately under an overhanging ledge of slate. According to one of the men who outwitted death by jumping, warning of the impending disaster was given by the scaling off of a few small pieces of coal. One of the group shouted to look out for a fall, and suiting action in the word, every man jumped out into the runway. Arrowwood hesitated believing that one of the miners had tossed apiece of coal through the air to start a scare, and the heavy weight fell squarely upon his back. It is estimated that he was buried under three tons of the rock. The miners rushed to the spot and dug the debris away as rapidly as possible, but Arrowwood had been crushed to death, almost every bone in his body being broken. He was a single man, and boarded heart the mine. INQUEST ON ARROWWOOD Coroner Will Determine Cause of Coal Miner's Death An inquest will be held tonight at 7 o'clock by Coroner Newlen for the purpose of investigating the death of Fleming Arrowwood, the young miner who was killed by falling slate in the Norwoodville mine at an early hour yesterday morning. Arrowwood was working with a number of other miners on a coal vein immediately under a ledge of slate. The other men jumped to safety when a few scales of slate fell into their midst. Arrowwood hesitated, believing that one of the miners had thrown the substance to scare him. He was caught instantly by three tons of the rock and crushed to death. He was a single man, 21 years of age, and roomed at a residence near the mine. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at Norwoodville. Interment will take place in the cemetery at Altoona.
