Mrs. Ganfield taught school in the rural country schools in Hazel Valley, at the Cascade District 9 School, also known as the Rock School, and at the rural Durango schools. Birdena also raised poultry for resale and was well-known as the turkey and egg lady. She was born on June 26, 1909, in Cascade, daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina (Hanser) Hawkins. She died at 2:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 1996, at the care center. She married Ralph Ganfield on June 11, 1934, in Maquoketa; he died on Sept. 1, 1987. She graduated from the former Lenox College, Hopkinton, and Cornell College, Mount Vernon. She was a member of Cascade Community Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Presbyterian Women's Club and the Oak Grove Country Club. Surviving are two daughters, Ann (Warren) Schaapveld, of Iowa City, and Mary Rose, of Waverly; two sons, Bob (Mary Ann) Ganfield and Edgar Ganfield, both of Cascade; seven grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Mark Schaapveld, Barbara Cunningham, Betty Ganfield and Lynn and Carol Rose; one great-grandchild, Bret Cunningham; and a brother, Robert Hawkins, and a sister, Grace Marshall, both of Cascade. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Edgar M. Hawkins, on June 3, 1990. An F. Birdena Ganfield Memorial Fund has been established. (Thank you to contributor Cheryl.)
