Houchin died at a hospital in Billings, Mont., Thursday, January 22, 1948, after an extended illness, aged 82 year, 9 months and 11 days. Flora Estelle Lewis, daughter of John B. and Emily J. Lewis, was born at Hillsdale, Mich., April 11, 1865. She came with her parents to Fillmore county, Nebraska in 1872. Her father followed the teaching profession in those pioneer days and served as county superintendent. Flora attended school in Geneva and later at York College. She then taught in rural schools in Fillmore county and also in the Geneva schools. She was married in Geneva to Orlando C. Houchin in September, 1885. She was an accomplished musician and gave music lessons and opened Geneva's first music store, which she operated until she sold to George H. Nelson. Mrs. Houchin was an active member of the Geneva Methodist church and its faithful organist until her removal from the city, serving about thirty-five years. In 1906 Mr. and Mrs. Houchin moved to Billings, Mont., where she had since resided at Billings she continued her musical work and church work. She was artistically inclined and she operated an art and handicraft shop many years. About fifteen years ago she took up the art of weaving as a hobby, but it developed into a thriving business and from her looms came many beautiful fabrics, draperies, rugs, and linens. In recent years her daughter, Mrs. Louise Donisthorpe has been associated with her in the business. Mrs. Houchin had a keen and active mind and was well read. She was a member of the First Methodist church, the Theosophical Society and the Drama club of billings. She was for many years active in the D. A. R. and Woman's club. She was a fine wife and mother, friendly and social. She loved young people and youth responded to her teachings. Mrs. Houchin is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Louise B. Donisthorpe, and a son, Glen, both of Billings, a granddaughter, Mrs. Lousie Dodge and a great-grandson, Theodore Dodge of Cody, Wyo., other relatives and many friends. After a service at Billings, the body was brought to Geneva, where services were held at the Hrubesky funeral home Monday afternoon, January 26, Rev. Ben F. Wallace officiated. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery beside her husband, who passed away in March, 1947. The Nebraska Signal February 5, 1948 page 1.
