Flora lived her whole life in this community and was beloved by all her neighbors and friends. August 14, 1901, she was united in marriage to Samuel J. Brownlee, who had moved to Keosauqua from Delaven, Ill., four years previous, following the death of his wife and two daughters in a tornado. Flora became mother to his children, Edith, Pearl and Paul. A very devoted, loving, faithful mother she proved to be. Her memory will for them ever be a denial and rebuke to all stories that might detract from the mother and love and care of a step-mother. And in like manner, they loved her, and in later years repaid her care by their tender ministrations. Their devotedness could not have been greater nor their grief and sense of loss keener, had she been a mother in the flesh. Her interests were varied and her zeal and faithfulness to each cause, an inspiration to other. Mrs. Brownlee was a charter member of the Needlecraft Club which was organized some eight years ago. The meeting never seemed just right unless Flora yas with them. At the 25th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary, she was honored as one of the six remaining charter members. Unable to be present her carnation and other favors were taken to her and the prized carnation still graced her living room at the time of her death. In the auxiliary, she was always an ardent worker, she held various offices, including that of president and was also a past county president. While not a charter member of the Royal Neighbors, she was one of the older members, always faithful. During the past five years, often too ill to attend elsewhere, she would insist they come to her home for the meetings, which they often did. She was interested in Purdom Cemetery Association and for 23 years was president, relinquishing that office last years headed the Women's Relief Corps of Keosauqua, an organization that has now been discontinued for some time. But among her many interests her church undoubtedly held first place. Baptized over 54 years ago, she was a faithful member of the Keosauqua Christian church throughout the years. Until her illness five years ago she sang in the choir, and was often heard singing about her home. One of her great sorrows in recent years was her inability to keep on with her choir work. She attended the Dorcas and Missionary societies and was faithful in her service in both organizations. Perhaps her first love along church lines, outside the church itself was her Bible School class. She enjoyed the Sunday sessions and the monthly study and social hour. One of her great virtues was her enthusiasm for whatever she undertook until others were encouraged and helped. She never missed church service if it was at all possible for her to attend. And often she and Sam attended when it was a real effort to do so. But they did love the house of the Lord. Since Sam went on ahead in July in 1944 neighbors have missed the homey picture they made was in the eventide they sat in their room with shades up and her white hair a crown of glory, and their cordial welcome to friends who might drop in for a few minutes. But Flora left alone kept her vigil and many will miss her as they pass by and there is no smiling face looking out the window. Many adults will remember their Christmas tree in the yard, and the popcorn and treats for young and old who came their way at the joyous Christmas season. Mrs. Brownlee leaves to mourn her passing a brother, Will Long of Bonaparte; a sister, Mary DeHart of Santa Maria, Calif; three children, Edith Ross of Keosauqua, Pearl Brownlee of Atlanta, Ga., and Paul Brownlee of Ottumwa, two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, two nephews, one niece, other relatives and a great host of friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, February 17, at the Christian church in Keosauqua with the Rev. Edna M. Fellows in charge. Music was by Keith Gaston accompanied by Mrs. Gaston at the piano. The bearers were Fred Rigby, Weldon Lee, Grant Higdon, P.O. Peel, Paul Daughrity and E.C. Dorothy.
