Her birthplace was on the present Bruce Sersland farm in rural Decorah. Florence Johnson was baptized March 18 1917 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by Rev. Paul Koren. She was also confirmed at Washington Prairie by Rev. Koren on June 7, 1931. She received her early education at the Broghammer Country School and was a 1936 graduate of Decorah High School. February 14, 1942 she was united in marriage to Arthur S. Johnson at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by Rev. Oscar E. Engebretson. They moved into the house at 206 E. Broadway where Florence Johnson lived until her death. Art and Florence Johnson enjoyed their life together before his death in 1961. During these years, they enjoyed fishing in the area and in Northern Minnesota. Family and friends often accompanied them on these trips. Their farm was a very important part of their lives and Florence Johnson continued to own the operation until January 1992. She had always enjoyed visits and a close association with the McIntosh family on Art Johnson's home farm. Florence Johnson was a highly respected businesswoman in Decorah. She spent her early working years at the Decorah Posten-Anundsen Publishing Company. Later she became the owner and manager of the Mode O'Day Dress Shop. Her customers and employees were her first priority. She sold the business and retired in August of 1985. Florence Amalia Johnson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur Johnson on July 21, 1961; three sisters: Mabel Byers, Agnes Seegmiller and Elsie Cutting; and four brothers: Hillman, Arnold and Raymond Sersland and a brother in infancy.
