Aunt Norma [Kathleen Boedecker] went to Berkeley, when not many women went to college. She became a C.P.A. She was one of the first women to do that. She attended Berkeley, for 2 years, and then came home to help care for her father, after he had a heart attack, and then she finished the rest of her studies, by mail. Aunt Norma loved cars and was proud of the fact that a cop once pulled her over and told her
that "she was not driving too fast, she was flying too low."
Grandma Florencie Ellen (Boedecker) Facey had a wallpapering business with her sister-in law Mae E. (Kepp) Boedecker. When Lulu was a baby she fell down a flight of stairs and broke her hip. When she was a senior citizen she fell down the stairs and broke the same hip. In those days there was not much that could be done for her. She ended up in a wheelchair. That is why Grandma Florencie used a cane before she had to and why she was so afraid of falling. Lulu always used to say when she was asked if she wanted more to eat or drink " No thank you, my sufficiency is well supplied anything more would be superfluously." She drank coffee all day long up until 10 at night.
She loved chocolate! When Aunt Norma was entertaining
gentleman callers, Lulu would come in, take the flowers and chocolates into the kitchen and then she would eat all of the chocolate! J.H. [John Henry Boedecker] built the home in Etna that Aunt Norma lived in and also the one that Grandma Florencie and Grandpa Calvin [Hiram Facey] lived in. The home that John Joseph was born in was up old Etna and it was washed away during a flood year.
Lulu wrote to her father in April of 1902 from Manton, CA to tell him that her son Lee had died of Diphtheria. She received the letter back stamped deceased, that is how she found out that her father had died as well. Her father had died in February and her son had died in March.
