Read More	daughter of Sanford Benton Satterlee & Effie May Barrett Big Timber Pioneer, December 7, 1983 Ethel Westervelt Passes Away at the Pioneer Home Ethel Westervelt, 95, died Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Nursing Home where she had lived for the past two and a half years. She was born in Plainfield, IA on May 16, 1888, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benton Satterlee. She left high school after her sophomore year to attend teacher's college for one semester. She began teaching in South Dakota when she was 16. At age 19 she taught ungraded rural school in Iowa with 50 pupils for $50.00 a month. She married Lewis Westervelt on December 21, 1910, in Waverly IA. In 1913 the Westevelt's and his sister's family, Mr. and Mrs. Will Robinson, homesteaded on the West White Beaver 21 mile north of Reed Point, MT. Mrs. Westervelt later wrote a book for her descendants describing the homestead experience. In 1915 she helped organize an Evangelical Church which met in a school house north of Red Point for many years. They moved to Big Timber in 1931 where she was active in the Evangelical Church for more than 45 yeats. She was also one of the original members of the Trio Club. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1958, her son Milo in 1955, her daughter June Hathaway in 1972, and a grandson, Johnnie Westervelt in 1969. Surviving are two sons, Leon and Paul both of Big Timber, one daughter, Lola Perrins of Seattle, one sister, Marguerite Meggitt of Plainfield, IA; twenty-four grandchildren, fifty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Kienitz officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Casket bearers will be David Hathaway, Glen Westervelt, Royal Westervelt, Nick Westervelt, Mike Westervelt, and Kelly Westervelt. Honorary bearers are all of her friends. Music will be by Alan Hathaway and Tim Hathaway with Debbie Seibert as organist. Selections will be "Face to Face' and "Goodnight and Good Morning.". Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386)
