Florence Nagel was born 10-16-1910 in Macao, Macau. She also went by the nicknames of "Flossie" which is American and "Flo" which is English. Florence was born in Macau (now Macao) which was then a Portegese Colony. In December 2000 it went back to China. Macao is an island opposite of Hong Hong. She lived in China until she was 19 years old. She then came to America and went to Pacific Union College in 1929 where she graduated in 1931 from a Bible Workers Course and in 1933 with a major in theology. From 1934 to 1935 she took premed at P.U.C. and then went to Loma Linda, California in 1935 and to White Memorial Hospital in Pomona, CA and co-op work for two years at Los Angeles County General until 1938. Finished med. tech. course. Florence then dropped out because of measles and scarlet fever. Florence had gone to UCLA and met Ervin and both were going to take medicine, but on November 11, 1943 Ervin was taken to the Army which mandated canceling their Thanksgiving wedding plan. Florence later joined the Army and both married on April 15, 1944 in Neosho, Missouri. They were together one year eleven days and Ervin shipped out to Okinawa and WWII and then to Korea. Came back and graduated La Sierra, California in 1948 and from medicine in 1953. Both then went to Thiland as missionaries. They were in boot camp for one year and then on to Vietnam for four and a half years. Florence Nagel married Ervin Winton, M.D. 4-15-1944 and they adopted two children: William Lawrence Winton, "Billy" (Lawrence was Florence's first boyfriend and WLW, his initials, was one of the biggest radio stations at the time) and Mary Bernice Winton, "Bunny" (named after Ervin's sister that died as a baby with pneumonia when they were moving from South Dakota). Ervin, on his father's side, belongs to royal line of England. Ervin's grandmother is a direct decendant of David Livingston who was an explorer in Africa and the first to find Victoria Falls. Mr. Livingston's heart is in Africa, but his body was taken back to Westminster Abby, London. In December 2004, her daughter, then Mary Dunn, lived in Angwin, California, and her son, Billy Winton, was doing carpentry work near Kalispell, Montana. Florence's second marriage was to Pastor Ezra Longway on 11-11-1973. They did not have any children together, but Ezra had five children. Florence's third marriage was to Kenneth Fisher, M.D. on 2-24-1990. Kenneth died May 24, 1999 in St. Helena, California, of cancer. Dr. Fisher was a general practitioner, then an ophthalmologist who used to work with Dr. Hersel Butka in Montemorelos, Mexico, and they started the hospital and university there. They had no children together, but Kenneth had a daughter, Beverly. Florence's fourth marriage was to Pastor Rolland Harold Howlett on 11-21-1999 in Angwin, California. Rolland was born February 10, 1915 in Dansville, Michigan and his parents names are Clyde Cleveland Howlett and Mary Grace Binding. They have no children together, but Rolland has two children, Patricia and Louise. In 2005 Rolland celebrated his 90th birthday. We have a holiday letter from her and Rolland in December 2004 expressing her happiness at celebrating her 94th birthday. She also announced that Pacific Press is publishing a book of her lifework in many foreign lands, entitled, "Lotus Blossom Returns." It was available in Adventist Book Stores on March 1, 2005. One can enjoy reading the many stories where God has shown His wonderful guidance in this book. Many wonderful black and white family photos are contained in this book and were used in the family genealogy project.

2004 Christmas Letter: "Where Did 2004 Fly Away To? Rolland writes: But it was a memorable year! Florence celebrated her 94th birthday Oct. 16, daughter Pat O'Neil could have retired but is teaching one more year at Nampa, ID, son-in-law Don Driver could retire from his Beltsville, MD pastorate but will continue for another two years to give daughter Louise more time at the ABC. Our El Dorado Nature Club celebrated its 20-year anniversary.... Nov. 21, our 5th wedding anniversary, Louise and Don will fly into Sacramento. We will drive south to Loma Linda for a Howlett and Longway Thanksgiving reunion. Florence writes: I want to thank my Heavenly Father for allowing me to celebrate my 94th birthday. And I want to tell you how very much I appreciated all your lovely greeting cards, phone calls and computer messages from around the world. I just can't believe it is 71 years ago when I was graduated from dear old PUC. Time has taken me around the world. And I do thank God for giving me a part of His vineyard. As most of you know, I have had four lovely husbands, Ervin Winton, M.D., Pastor Ezra Longway, Kenneth Fisher, M.D., Pastor Rolland Howlett. All were pioneer missionaries. Maybe not many of you know that Pacific Press is publishing a book of my lifework in many foreign lands, entitled "Lotus Blossom Returns." It will be in Adventist Book Stores around March 1, 2005. You will enjoy reading the many stories where God has shown His wonderful guidance. We are both doing well for our age. My daughter, Mary Dunn, lives here in Angwin. My son, Billy Winton, is doing carpentry work near Kalispell, MT. Do come visit us if you are near Angwin. God bless you all. Happy Holidays"
She could speak both Chinese and English fluently. She had a wonderful memory and at age 90 she could recall details, names, and places so well she amazed people. She was also writing her second book about the first hundred years of Adventist missionaries in China in 2005.
