Description	:	Florence Irene Hughes was born January 5, 1917 to David Albert and Blanche Gertrude (Barr) Major at Orchard, Nebraska in Antelope County, the oldest of four children and passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Lincoln at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 28 days. Read More	Florence Irene Hughes was born January 5, 1917 to David Albert and Blanche Gertrude (Barr) Major at Orchard, Nebraska in Antelope County, the oldest of four children and passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Lincoln at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 28 days. She attended and graduated from Ewing High School with the Class of 1935 and then attended Northwest Missouri State College in Marysville, Missouri and also Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska where she received her teaching certificate. Florence taught schools in Hitchcock County, Alma and Trenton for 7 1/2 years. She also taught piano lessons for more than 30 years and often played the organ for church services. She was fond of classical music and was very knowledgeable about the classical composers. On May 28, 1947, Florence was united in marriage to Rev. Ellsworth G. Hughes at Trenton, Nebraska, and this union was blessed with three children, Alan, Judy and Jane. Florence was an active assistant to Ellsworth in his service to the United Methodist Church. They served parishes in the communities of Tekamah, Atkinson, Mitchell, Red Cloud, Syracuse and moved to Milford in 1974 after serving the Friend United Methodist Church from 1970 to 1974. During his retirement, they continued their ministry by serving the West Blue Church south of Milford for 14 years. Florence was a member of the Milford United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Florence moved to the Heartland Park in Seward and more recently made her home at Village Manor Nursing Home in Lincoln. Florence loved to bake, garden, study family genealogy, and made quilts for each of her children. Her family was important to her and she enjoyed spending time with them whenever possible. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alan R. and Judi Hughes, Alpine, AZ, daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Terry Desch, Grand Island, Jane and Jeff Ahl, Lincoln, four grandchildren and spouses, Terri Lynn Dorgan, Elk City, OK, Gretchen and Stacy Heusel, Ryan and Jackie Desch, all of Omaha, Jason Ahl, Lincoln, six great-grandchildren, Tyler and Joseph Dorgan, Sam and Max Heusel, Maisie and Annie Desch, brother, Earl Major, Memphis, TN, brother-in-law, Ed Mitchell, Denver, CO nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Florence was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ellsworth in 2004, two sisters, Helen Mitchell and Ruth Newport, sister-in-law, Mabel Major.
