Florence Maragretta Wehling was born Aug 24, 1917, near Anamosa, Iowa to Henry J and Sadie (Eden) Wehling. She attended country school and Anamosa High School, graduating in 1936 with a Normal Training certificate. She taught at the country school for two years. She married William C. Otten on Dec. 29, 1937, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church in rural Monticello, Iowa. William died March 1, 1992. Florence was a farm wife for 33 years. She worked at Reliance Manufacturing for five years, Bud's Super Valu in Monticello for 7 1/2 years and at Wal-Mart in Anamosa for 8 1/2 years. She was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, where she was a member of the Sarah Circle, taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. She was a member of Peacemakers and had sewed over 100 quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking bread and wedding cakes, gardening and reading. Florence was a 4-H Jones County Health Champion at the Iowa State Fair in 1933 and one of three salutatorians at her 1936 graduation from Anamosa High School. She is survived by one son, David W. Otten, and two granddaughters, Mattea Jo Otten and Vanessa Lyn Harding, all of Marion, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Dorthea Wehling, and two brothers-in-law, James A. White and Virgil P. Hinz, all of Anamosa, Iowa. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and a special friend, Vicky Hinz, who cared for her in her final days. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Elfrieda White in 1997 and Leanna Mae Hinz in 1999; and a brother, Carl Wehling in 1974.
