Florence’s Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Florence Metz was born April 13, 1921, in Dickinson, the oldest of 11 children of George and Josephine (Krushensky) Metz. She was raised on her parents farm outside of South Heart. Being the oldest, she shouldered much responsibility for assisting with outdoor farm chores and the care of younger siblings. As a young women she worked in service jobs before becoming a full time homemaker. She was married to Allen Casady from 1946 to 1952. Florence was united in marriage to Helmuth Mettler on November 21, 1953 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. When Helmuth started the Mettler Construction Company, she did the payroll and books for him. Florence had a deep Catholic faith and demonstrated it in her daily life and interactions with others. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America, St. Anne’s Altar Society, and a Eucharistic Minister for 30 plus years. She belonged to the Red Hats, and Germans from Russia. She was historian and record keeper for the Metz family genealogy, and loved working on crossword puzzles and reading. For 25 years she and Helmuth enjoyed their road trips to spend Christmas with Shirley and Shane, cooking and baking, playing whist and pinochle. She moved to Greeley in September 2012, and while living in Greeley, Florence enjoyed outings for lunch, spelling bee’s, bingo, crafts, painting and musical productions. She enjoyed the companionship of her great-granddog, Shadow, and recently becoming a Bronco’s fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmuth on November 29, 2012; her parents; sisters, Tillie Garrison and Dorothy Anton; brothers, Louis and Bill Metz; special nephews, Steven and Gregory Foust; and other nieces and nephews.
