S. FORMED HERE Mrs. J. B. Filhiol Pioneer President, Has Led Logtown Group 30 Years The little community of Logtown in Ouachita parish has claim to nationwide fame in that the FIRST Home Demonstration Club in the country was started here in 1914. It succeeded the Priscilla Sewing Circle which was established here in 1909. With the exception of one year, Mrs. J. B. Fulhiol has served as president continuously ever since the club was established. In the fall of 1909, the women of Logtown community met at the home of Mr. J. B. Filhiol and organized the Priscilla Sewing Circle which proved to be a very successful and enjoyable organization as well as a little social feature for the community. The Logtown community at that time consisted of only a few families; three of the six charter members still belong to the club. The first president of the little club was Mrs. Ida Williams. The Priscilla Club continued until the fall of 1914 when the Home Demonstration agent began organizing Home Demonstration clubs. Miss Mamie Fuller, the agent at that time met with the ladies of the Logtown community at the home of Mrs. Filhiol and the Priscilla Club was changed to Logtown Demonstration Club. Miss Miller's first project was the canning of vegetables and fruits in tin cans. The equipment consisted of soldering irons, a tin tub, and an outdoor furnace. Miss Miller's work was back in the horse and buggy days which was her way of transportation over the entire parish. Miss Miller gave about five years of her work, love and influence to this parish. The community, now, has grown from a village to a little town due to the building of the Boeuf River Lumber Company. Miss Miller was succeeded by Miss Amy Holmes, who spent just a short time here. Miss Buie succeded Miss Holmes, who did work with the children of the community, now called the 4-H work. Miss Buie was succeeded by Mr. Jewel McQuiller, who is still the same faithful agent. The home demonstration agent has accomplished many new things in the past four years in Ouachita Parys. The Logtown Club has ended thirty years of service under the able leadership of our president, Mr. J. B. Filhiol, who had never tired and always wanted the club to be the leader. 1939 has been the happiest of all years to the modest Mrs. Filhiol, who with Mrs. Jewell McQuiller assistance, has organized a Junior Club at Bosco.
