Edward E. Holmes, formerly Miss Florence Pickering, of this place, died at Visalia, Kentucky, on Tuesday of last week. The body was brought here and the funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. == "The News-Herald" Hillsboro, Ohio August 4, 1892, Page 4, Image 4 Florence Morris Holmes Florence Morris Holmes, daughter of J. K. and M. L. Pickering, was born at New Lexington, Highland Co., Ohio, on the 6th day of February, 1862, and died at Visalia, Kentucky, July 19th, 1892, in the thirty-first year of her age. Her girlhood days were passed in Hillsboro; here her young life matured; here, in the Union Schools of which she was a graduate, she was educated; and here, today, in this church, still lingers the remembrance of her devoted piety, her sincere Christian character and her self sacrificing, efficient aid in every branch of church and Sunday school work. Her mother's testimony is, that as a daughter she was ever dutiful, ever obedient and never uttered an unkind word; and as a sister and the eldest child, she was affectionate and helpful to the younger members of the family. She was united in marriage on the 8th day of August, 1882, to Edward E. Holmes, who, with a sweet baby daughter two weeks old, survives her. Upon her marriage she left this church and home of her childhood to carry into broader fields of service of the Master, as a minister's wife, the influences and impressions of this church and her Christian home training upon her naturally womanly character. She left us a bright, devoted handmaiden of the Lord she loved so well. Patient and gentle has been her life, consecrated and true; her work well done, her Lord spoke to her and she slept; and as she entered into the valley her pure soul found refuge in the bosom of the Lord - her devoted life recompense in His smile. And hither returns her mortal remains to be tenderly consigned to the bosom of our mother earth, and, in accordance with her wish expressed long since, to find their resting place, the grave of her sister-in-law, Ella Holmes, whom she loved sincerely. As a wife she was loving, gentle, self sacrificing. Since her death one of the official members of the charge served the last three years has said, "She was a model minister's wife; everybody loved her and the people are weeping." Her death hour was without exceeding pain; she was conscious at intervals. At one such time with eyes of faith fixed as though beholding surrounding heavenly hosts, she quoted in clear and steady tones, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Again her faith found expression in these last words of her life: "Thy Lord is my strength," and added, "Blessed be the name of the Lord forever." Since her little daughter's birth her hold on life was particularly strong, yet at the Master's word, without a murmur, as patiently as she had lived it, she gave it up. "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord," for she shines as the stars. Blessed, thrice "blessed are they who die in the Lord."
