24 Aug 1849: Her parents, James Wirt and his wife Margaret, sold 186 acres in [Brush Creek,] Highland Co., OH (where they were living in the 1840 Census) and moved to Bloomington, McLean Co., IL. Florence would have been born about five months after they sold this property. Note: Her death certificate and 1900 Census claim she was born in Ohio, so they may have remained in the area until after she was born.

[p. 1] "Sept. 30, 1863 Dear Mother, We received your letter yesterday and we were glad to hear that you arrived safely at Sabina without any difficulty or accident. I suppose you have been gone about long enough to want to take a peep in the kitchen to see how we are doing up things. I get up every morning at day light and work from thtat til night and get along with every thing tolerably well except poreing [sic - pouring] out the coffee you know & was always awkward at that. I have something else to tell you last saturday just after dinner there was a carriage drove up to the door and who should it be [p. 2] cousin Arm. Wirt from Kentucky I don't believe & was ever so much surpised in my life but she is a dear sweet cousin and I do really love her. She intends to stay until next week and then go to Bloomington where she will perhaps remain this winter and teach music. We intended going out to John's today but just as we got ready Mrs. Esthmell from Ben. Town C[O] and Em. Crum came and we were disappointed. Gussy & Florence are still going to school. They keep Bettie bothered all the time & think you will be in Gussy debt preety deep til you return that is if she continues to teach more than the one month. Rush is still hearding the cattle from the farm and digs potatoes between whiles. Henry is still working for us. [p. 3] I don't fee[l] in a writing humor to night for I forgot it until we were just going to bed when I mentioned something about writing and cousin Ann would not let] me to til I wrote you a few lines so I am doing it in double-quick and harly tak[ing] time to think. But I will write you again and give you a more minute description of the home affairs. Give my love to Grandmother and to my unkle [sic] and aunts and cousins and tell them I would like to see them especially grandmother. Don't make yourself uneasy about home but try and enjoy your visit and write soon and often to your affectiojnate daughter Kate. [p. 4] Florence wanted to write some in this but she is fast asleep and perhaps in the morning she will not have time as the boys are going to start to town pretty early excuse mistakes good night. don't let anyone see this."
