Description	:	I, Floretta Joyce Kaufman Waltner, the oldest child of Elias and Hannah Deckert Kaufman was born November 30, 1929 and departed this life October 14, 2016 at the age of 86. After attending Freeman Academy and graduating from Freeman Junior College I entered the teaching profession for several years. On December 3, 1944 I was baptized by Rev. J.J. Read More	I, Floretta Joyce Kaufman Waltner, the oldest child of Elias and Hannah Deckert Kaufman was born November 30, 1929 and departed this life October 14, 2016 at the age of 86. After attending Freeman Academy and graduating from Freeman Junior College I entered the teaching profession for several years. On December 3, 1944 I was baptized by Rev. J.J. Regier and became a member of the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church. After my marriage to Gene Waltner on August 10, 1950 my membership was transferred to the Salem Mennonite Church. Here I served my Lord through music, teaching Sunday school, and other areas of church life that were important to me. While raising our three children, Ken, Steve, and Kristi, Gene and I enjoyed gardening, lawn care, etc. on our farm east of Freeman. Early in life my parents instilled in me a concern for the underprivileged of this world which lead to including several young men from the Native American community to join our family for a period of time. This led to visits of inmates at the SD State Penitentiary through the M-2 program for 30 years. Later in life when neurological problems prevented me from volunteering my help, I found joy in keeping up with the activities of my growing family. After losing three precious family members, my husband Gene; son Ken; and great-grandson Alex, I found comfort from promises found in scriptures. Along with many other passages were the words in Isaiah 43: 2-3: “When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression you will not be burned up. The flame will not consume you for I am the Lord your God, your savior.” During my final days of life here on this earth my family, Salem Mennonite home, and hospice with the help of Dr. Kirton gave me wonderful care. Meanwhile Psalms 17:15 renders my philosophy of life. “As for me my contentment is not in wealth but in seeing you and knowing all is well between us. And when I awake in heaven I will be fully satisfied, for I will see you face to face.” Welcoming Joyce to her heavenly home are her parents Elias and Hannah Kaufman, husband Gene, son Ken, great-grandson Alex, sister LaVerle Graber, and brother Jennings Kaufman. She is survived by her loving family; son Steve (Ginger) Waltner of Marion, SD; daughter Kristi (Jeff) Miller of Harrisburg, SD; daughter in law Cynthia Waltner of Larchwood, IA; brother Burton (Eileen) Kaufman of Marion, SD. Giving her much joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Travis (Jessica) and Ayin, Jhett and Paxxton Waltner; Brett (Sarah) and Kendal, Aivyana, and Nolynn Waltner; Jenna (Christopher) and Connor Thomas; Derek (Whitney) Waltner; Cole (Corbin) Miller; Garet (Erin) and Tristin and Skylar Miller; and Adrianne Miller.
