"Lizzie" (1877- ) Flora appeared on the following censuses: 1870 - Orange Township, Delaware Co., Ohio 1880 - Berlin Township, Delaware Co., Ohio After her mother died in Feb 1872 and her father remarried in Oct 1872, Flora's father sent three of his children from his first marriage to live with other families. Flora, the oldest, her brother Chalkley and youngest full-brother Edward were sent to live with other families; her father kept her siblings Elva and Charles living with him and his 2nd wife and his children by his 2nd wife. Exactly when Flora, Chalkley and Edward were sent to live with others is not known, but it was before the 1880 census. Flora appears on the 1880 census living with the family of John Chandelier in Berlin Township; she is listed as a "servant" of the family. This was not an uncommon habit for people in those days to do. When one of the parents died, many times the children were sent to live with others - sometimes as "servants" and others as apprentices; sometimes with family, sometimes with friends of the family or business acquaintances. Flora's brother Chalkley was living in Genova Township in Delaware County with the J.P. Freeman family; Chalkley is listed as a boarder. Where and who Flora's brother Edward ended up living with in 1880, we haven't been able to determine but we do believe that he remained in Delaware County, Ohio - close to his family. However, we do know from the 1885 Kansas State census that Edward was living with Flora and Henry so obviously, he kept in touch with her. On 12 Feb 1882 in Delaware County, Flora married Henry Hodgden, Jr. (1850-1931). Their marriage record was found in the "Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1994". Flora and Henry had two sons: Merrill W. (1882-1961) and William* (1885-1957) William was also found on one census record as Wilfred Flora and Henry obviously moved to Kansas not too long after their marriage as their first son was born in Ellsworth County, Kansas on 19 Nov 1882. His place of birth was confirmed in the various Kansas censuses. The family was also found on the 1 Mar 1885 Kansas State Census Collection living in Garfield, Ellsworth County. Flora's father, James Madison Monroe Lincoln, is said to have been related to President Abraham Lincoln, which may be correct but we have yet to prove that. However, on the 1870 census beside James' name, there is a hand-written note which states "cousin to Old Abe" which is believed to be a reference to Abraham Lincoln. *I am descended from Flora's brother Chalkley who was my great grandfather. My mom lived with Chalkley and his wife, Isabelle, when mom was just a child. This makes Flora my great grand aunt.
