She attended school in Freeman, graduating in 1936. Elizabeth attended Freeman Junior College. She graduated with honors in 1946 from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD with degrees in English and music. She taught at Diamond Valley country school, Marion elementary, Lennox and Scotland High Schools. Elizabeth married Edwin Busch in 1941. He died in WW2 in 1943. She attended school in Freeman, graduating in 1936. Elizabeth attended Freeman Junior College. She graduated with honors in 1946 from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD with degrees in English and music. She taught at Diamond Valley country school, Marion elementary, Lennox and Scotland High Schools. Elizabeth married Edwin Busch in 1941. He died in WW2 in 1943. When teaching in Lennox, she met Wilbur Foss and they married in 1946. Elizabeth lived and loved music all her life. She organized the Scotland Community Choir in 1947. In the first year, there were 120 members. She was a church organist in Freeman and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church (the stone church) rural Menno. She taught piano and voice lessons for 40 years. Elizabeth and Wilubr owned and operated the Coast to Coast hardware store in Scotland, SD for 17 years. They moved to Yankton, SD in 1963 and returned to Scotland in 1997. Due to her husband’s interest in fiddling, they organized the SD Old Time Fiddlers. Many honors and friendships followed. They were both selected as the first Living Legends in Yankton in 2001. They also received recognition in the SD Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Elizabeth was a member of P.E.O. and received her 50 year pin in 2016. Elizabeth was known as a woman of faith, insightfulness and intuition – always an encourager. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and mentor to generations. In December of 2010, Elizabeth moved to the Good Samaritan Center. Following Wilbur’s death in November, 2015 she moved to Minnetonka, MN to be closer to her family. She died there on August 1, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Aaron, Ray, Leon Kautz and sister Frieda Tschetter. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Nancy (William) Penk of Hopkins, MN; a grandson Ryan (Anette) and their sons Bjorn and Noah of Lier, Norway; and a granddaughter Emily (Marshall) Penk-Smith and their daughter Elsa of St. Louis Park, MN.
