Read More	1882~1982 Defiance (Iowa) Century Review: PETE HULSEBUS JR. Pete Hulsebus Jr., eldest son of Peter Hulsebus Sr. and Helena W eber , was born near Warrensburg, Illinois in 1883. In 1884 he moved to the Defiance community with his parents and sisters to a tract of open prairie land southwest of Defiance, purchased by his father in 1882 from the railroad company for $7.02 per acre. Pete Jr. grew up here and went to country school. As for high school, he told that he and Sam Hulsebus went through that in one day -in the front door and out the back! He also told of hauling wagon loads of apples, from their farm, down into Missouri to cider presses. He told of country school days -- rolling very big balls of snow down the hill and breaking open the school door and making a mess. He got whacked over the knuckles at school for being left-handed. The teacher was one of his older cousins. In 1905 Pete was married to Floy Maxwell at HarIan. They lived near Defiance until 1940, most of those years on a farm one and a half miles west of Defiance. Floy was born in Shelby County in 1884 and lived about five miles south of Defiance. Her parents later moved to a farm a half mile west of Defiance, near the railroad track. Her father was known as "Doc" Maxwell and raised sheep. In 1918 they moved with their son, Cecil, to a farm near Mansfield, Missouri. Floy graduated from Defiance High School in 1903. She taught for two years in the country school just two miles north of Defiance. She also taught Sunday School for many years in Defiance. Pete and Floy were parents of five children: Nellie (deceased) married Julius Jensen and moved to a farm near Kirkman. May married Dave Campbell and moved to a farm south of Lewis, owned by Pete. May and Dave also lived in Wall Lake a short time, on a farm. They now live in Yetter, where May runs a small grocery store and Dave is a trucker. Fay, known to everyone as "Bud," married Theone McCullough of Lewis. They lived on a farm south of Lewis until 1963, when Bud passed away. Theone is now deceased. Leone married Walter Beermann and they have been living about four and a half miles north of Defiance for more than 41 years. Vemie married Otis Marshall (deceased), of Lewis, and lived there many years. She now lives in Farmington, Minnesota, but is planning a move to Stanton, Iowa, to be near her eldest son. Pete and Floy had 25 grandchildren, well scattered in Iowa and other states. Pete received a license to sell real estate in the late 1930s, a job he really enjoyed. They moved to Lewis in 1940, where he and Bud farmed together, and in later years moved to Lake City to be near relatives in the reclining years. Pete told many a wild tale to his kids when they were young, causing them to sit open mouthed in awe. Of course, Pete was usually the hero. Pete was also a horse trader, not always coming out on top. One day he brought home a burrow mule, in the back seat of his Model T Ford, its head out one side and tail out the other. That burrow was enjoyed by all. Pete passed away at the age of 86 years and Floy at the age of 88. Both are buried in Defiance Cemetery.
