Read More	Floyd Albert Hess, Sr. (September 13, 1938 - January 14, 2013) Floyd Albert Hess, Sr., 74, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2013, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka. He was born September 13, 1938, at Burlington, the son of Raymond H. and Lula Mae (Durow) Hess. He was raised on the family farm in the Glendale neighborhood in northeast Coffey County, Kansas, and graduated from Burlington High School in 1956. Following high school he worked on the farm and sold seed. He was married and became the father of three children, Vernon, Floyd, Jr., and Rhonda Lea who died in infancy. He later married Phyllis Skillman Lloyd and took in her sons, Alan and David, and Floyd and Phyllis became the parents of a daughter, Julie. On April 21, 1985, he and Joan Cole were married at Burlington. He welcomed her children, Maverick, Wyatt, and Kathy into the family. Floyd lived in several locations and was employed in various jobs over the years. He moved to Topeka when he was young and was an over the road trucker before moving to Kansas City where he was employed in an automotive shop. He then moved to Iola and worked at Thompson's Poultry. In 1964 he moved back to Burlington . He hauled cattle to Kansas City every week for Harold Keith, he operated a Gulf Service Station, and after Gulf pulled out of Kansas he operated a Mobile Bulk Fuel Service. He delivered freight for EFD out of Emporia and operated the Trail House Café in Burlington. He was a rural mail carrier for more than 30 years and retired from that position although he didn't slow down. He delivered the Topeka Capital Journal for more than thirty years and drove for Via Currier for twelve years. In early years he served in the Kansas National Guard in Burlington. In 1987 he and Joan moved to their home east of Burlington where Floyd enjoyed raising cattle and chickens. Floyd loved the outdoors, whether it was deer hunting, fishing, or camping with family and friends. Besides his daughter, Rhonda, he was also preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles Hess; a step-son, David Lloyd; and two great-grandchildren. He leaves his wife, Joan; two sons, Vernon Hess and wife Eva, Burlington, and Floyd Hess, Jr. and wife Rhonda, Archie, Missouri; his daughter, Julie Young and husband Mike, Edgerton, Kansas; four step-children, Alan Lloyd and Lori, Burlington, Maverick Cole and wife Denise, Independence, Kansas, Wyatt Cole and wife Millie, Burlington; and Kathy Burr and husband Victor, Wichita, KS; 41 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 19, at the Burlington Christian Church. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery northeast of Burlington. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Memorial contributions may be made to "God's Storehouse" and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
