Description	:	Floyd was born to Ben F. and Gertrude R. (Bossman) Smit. Floyd died in Maffin, New Guinea during WW II. Floyd attained the age of 25 years, 2 months and 5 days. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Pfc. Floyd Smit, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Smit, was killed in action at Maffin, New Guinea on October 2, 1944. Going overseas in February of that year, Floyd had been assigned to an infantry unit. Inducted February 12, 1942, Floyd received his basic training at Camp Forrest, Tenn. On November 25, 1942, Pfc. Smit was married to Wilma Plucker and the couple resided at Ft. Brady, Mich., where Floyd was on guard duty at the Soo Locks waterway. Floyd was also stationed at Camp Van Dorn, Miss., Ft. Benning, Ga., and Fort Ord, Calif, before being shipped overseas. Reared on his parents' farm near Lennox, Floyd Smit graduated from Lennox high school in 1937. He worked on the family farm until his induction. Born July 27, 1919, Floyd attained the age of 25 years, two months and five days. Memorial services were held at the Ebenezer Presbyterian church on Sunday, November 5, 1944, and the body was returned for reburial in February, 1949.
