Read More	Creston Daily Advertiser January 14, 1922 Page 13 FATALLY HURT IN COLLISION NEAR MASSENA The following article taken from the Massena Echo, Massena, Iowa, with regard to the fatal accident which resulted in the death of Floyd Dodge and injuries to Earl Mills and Tom Lewis is of interest as some of the parties mentioned are known to many Creston people Last Saturday evening, near the farm of Henry Greenwalt, 3 miles south of Massena, the worst automobile accident that ever occurred in this vicinity took place. Floyd Dodge was driving his father's care with a load of young companions going to a dance at Joe Eblen's on the county line. When near the Greenwalt farm they collided with a team drawing a heavily loaded wagon freighted with coal and driven by Walter Bright. Floyd Dodge sustained injuries from which he died in about an hour. Earl Mills sustained a fracture of the frontal bone of the head and for a time was thought his injuries would prove fatal. Tom Lewis was terribly cut about the face. The other boys received minor injuries excepting Elmer Kuesel who escaped unscathed. The personnel of the party was Floyd Dodge, Elmer Kuesel, and Tom Lewis, who occupied the front seat; Harold Lewis, Earl Mills, Bert Greenwalt, and Dee South who occupied the rear seat. They left Massena shortly after eight o'clock to attend a dance at the Eblen home. Full of life and the buoyancy of youth, they were speeding along at a speed which perhaps older heads would have feared. The lights were on but not working the best. When about 80 rods north of the Greenwalt place they collided head on with the team driven by Bright. The impact was so hard that the car was practically wrecked. One of the horses was so badly crippled it had to be shot and the other also badly injured. The boys say they did not notice the team until the accident had occurred. The tongue of the wagon was driven through the windshield and the steering wheel broken of its standards. Floyd Dodge was struck on the left breast by either the wagon tongue or a standard of the steering wheel and the chest cavity form open when the ribs were ripped from their attachment on the sternal bone. The lung was punctured and heart exposed to view. He suffered no pain and was scarcely aware of the fatal nature of his trouble and cheerfully admonished his companions who was lamenting his own injury to cheer up and said "it might have been worse." A general call for doctors was given and Doctor Miller was the first to arrive followed by Dr. Weaver of Cumberland and Dr. Penquite of Massena. The injured boys had been carried to the Greenwalt home. What little they could do to minister to the comfort of the Dodge boy was given but the shock of the terrible accident was so great that death soon ensued - probably less than an hour after the accident. Earl Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mills of Victoria township was found to have a fracture of the skull over the eyes. His wounds were dressed and a trained nurse is at his bedside and the doctors are doing all they can for him with the probabilities at this time all in his favor. It is deemed best to keep his mentality dulled with opiates but when the effects are passing away he converses some though still unconscious of the great accident and the sad results. It is believed he will make a full recovery. Thomas Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lewis, had some bad lacerations about the face from the glass flying from the broken windshield. The cheek was cut clean through and the tongue also cut. It is required seventeen stitches to repair the injury but Tom disdained an anesthetic and only had the quieting effects of cigarette while undergoing the ordeal. Dee South received a contusion on the left cheek. The other injuries were trivial. Walter Bright, who was driving the team, states he saw them coming on him so rapidly he only had time to pull over a little further to his right and stop when the collisions took place. He jumped form the wagon and escaped uninjured. When it was over they found one of the horses was way up on the radiator with its head in one of the boys laps. Every heart in this vicinity goes out to Mr. and Mrs. August Dodge and family in this Gethsemane of sorrow that has so suddenly been thrust upon them. And to Mr. and Mrs. Mills go the sincere hopes for a prompt and full restoration of their boy. To the others congratulations that they were not to participate in the bitterness of the occasion. May such sadness never again be visited upon this community is the fervent wish of all.
