Born in Bennett, Neb., he was the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Smith Wessel. A resident of Bridgeport for more than 50 years, he was a retired material handler for Raybestos, where he worked for more than 25 years and was a member of their Quarter Century Club. Wessel, age 83, of Bridgeport, devoted husband of the late Yolanda Montarro Wessel, died peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2005. Born in Bennett, Neb., he was the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Smith Wessel. A resident of Bridgeport for more than 50 years, he was a retired material handler for Raybestos, where he worked for more than 25 years and was a member of their Quarter Century Club. A veteran of World War II, he was a motor machinists mate 3rd class and had a distinguished career having served aboard many submarines, namely the USS Mt. Vernon, Sargo, Snapper, Holland, Salmon, Guardfish, Red Fish, Bowfinn and Ajule. For his meritorious service, he received the Presidential Unit Citation for submarine combat in the Asiatic Pacific. He was a member of the VFW Post 1111, East Main Street, Bridgeport and the DAV. Survivors include a devoted sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lena and Patsy Montarro of Easton; and caring niece and nephew, Patricia Cirillo and husband, Lou, of Easton; as well as several other nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; and several special friends in Guilford, Maine. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew's Church, followed by a military graveside service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Calling hours on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main Street, Bridgeport (on the Trumbull line). Published by Connecticut Post from Dec. 10 to Dec. 11, 2005.
